Duster

I found this funky sheer zebra duster at a thrift store near my mom's house a few months ago when I was up there to visit. It was actually a dress when in combination with the long black liner that came with it, but I much prefer it this way. I made a couple of modifications: I hemmed it from straight across to the tapered hem you see here, and I added a pleat in the back to give it some shape at the waist. It was quite the boxy 90's shape before.




This was a perfect outfit for our gorgeous fall weather. It was warm enough outside to bare a little skin, but not quite warm enough to expose all the limbs in their entirety. Boots and socks and bare legs was just the thing.

Pony Hair

I've had this top for a couple of years now, but I'm pretty sure this is the first I've ever worn it to work. Until now I've reserved it mainly for evenings out, because with the embellished butterfly applique it just has that feel to it. I've also taken it with me the last couple of Christmases I've spent down in Mexico, and it's brilliant on a warm, breezy evening at the beach when paired with a flowy skirt and sandals, and this same scarf loosely-tied as a belt.

With this outfit I found a way to make the top work for the office by covering the delicate spaghetti straps with the long cardigan, and holding everything together with the casual belt. I intentionally left the end of the belt flopping out to give it a more relaxed look. I didn't want the outfit to veer into the realm of club wear, particularly since I was also wearing 4-inch leopard print pony hair pumps.

I'll confess that when I pulled these shoes out of the closet the other day, I had to pause for a moment as I realized that I really had no idea exactly what "pony hair" is. I knew that it's the furry leather used in making shoes and handbags and such, but I honestly felt a little bit of a sinking feeling at the thought that this stuff might be made from actual ponies. So I Googled it. Turns out it's made from calf skin -- whew! An adorable baby cow instead of an adorable tiny horse. That's so much better.

Evolution

I tried to buy this dress last year at Banana Republic, but they didn't have any more in my size. Imagine my delight to find it at the Goodwill a few weeks ago for just $7! Though technically it's my size, the dress is actually quite a bit too big, as I discovered this morning when I put it on without the jeans and sweater I was wearing when I tried it in the store. No matter; it'll cost less than $15 to get it altered, which will still be an incredible deal for such a good quality dress.

I think I might also try overdying this dress as well, perhaps with an apple green. The oatmeal color actually strikes me as being less versatile than a color, since it really only looks good with other neutrals. If the dress was green I could wear it with any number of fun colors -- yellow, orange, navy, purple -- so stay tuned for the evolution of this garment. Better outfits are surely still to come.
